Colt was recently featured in his hometown news publication the Chicago Tribune which featured comments from the man himself as he discussed his road to becoming a professional wrestler.

“I watched wrestling and thought it was so cool,” Colt said. “I liked G.I .Joe and watching movies with Jean-Claude Van Damme. Wrestling is a mix of all those things." He continued, "I remember looking at game tapes and thinking I don’t look that cool,” Colt said. “The next year I wore a cowboy collar, a visor and arm bands [Speaking on trying to stand out with his ring gear]. In wrestling you need a way to stand out.”

Colt Cabana stated that his parents told him in order to pursue his dream of becoming a pro wrestler he would need to graduate college first. In 2002 Cabana graduated from Western Michigan University and not too soon after he made his way onto the Ring Of Honor talent roster alongside a man who would end up becoming the longest reigning WWE Champion of the modern era, CM Punk.

"My parents said you have to graduate college and then you can be a wrestler,” Colt said. "I wanted it [Amateur wrestling experience] on my wrestling resume,” Colt said. “When I was wrestling on TV I wanted them to be able to say I went to a Division 1A school.”
