The Undertaker On The Greatest Match Ever: That Is What Professional Wrestling Is Supposed To Be

At WWE Backlash, Randy Orton and Edge put on what WWE considers to be The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever. The match was billed as such before it even took place and though it may not have lived up to that standard, the general consensus is that it was a great match.

Appearing on WWE After The Bell, The Undertaker gave his thoughts on the bout and why he loved it as a veteran in this business.

"It almost brought a tear to my eye," he said. "I haven't seen that kind of wrestling match in so long. I understand the parameters and everything else, that they had a lot of time, but my God, what a story they told. An unbelievable story. I sent Edge a text today saying, 'The next time I go to the [Performance Center] to work with guys, I'm going to pull that tape up and show these guys and dissect it -- not that it won't be dissected 100 times by then -- just the little nuances of what they did. It restored so much faith in where I think the business should be and could be. That tape should be studied by our main roster guys. That is what professional wrestling is supposed to be. It's great being as athletic as all these guys are, but at the end of the day, it doesn't mean anything. When you rely solely on athleticism, you push the envelope to our audience and they are gonna get desensitized to the double backflip off the top and to the floor. It's self-preservation. You have to work smart to make it last. The guys now are relying too much on athleticism and not enough on storytelling."

Many veterans have made similar comments regarding the use of athleticism today and the lack of storytelling, including Randy Orton. In a separate interview, Orton discussed the importance of storytelling and not burning yourself out on a high-intensity style. You can find his full comments by clicking here.

Undertaker has made visits to the Performance Center in the past to review footage and give advice to recruits, with his most recent reported appearance being in January.
